The 2016 Presidential election has the makings for history to be made yet again. Regardless of what party you follow, we could have either the first woman or the first person of Jewish faith to become President of the United States. As I look back on history, since 1776 there have only been men in the role of President. We have to ask ourselves “why?”. Doesn’t that seem odd how the United States which is the land of the free and the land of opportunity would not have had a woman as President in its history? So many foreign countries have had women in high leadership roles. Look at the Queen of England. And here we are, the United States, still lagging behind in progressive leadership. Why a person’s religious beliefs should even matter in the role of President is also a very archaic view. We are seeing people make derogatory comments based on gender and religion when they target the Democratic nominees. Why are we so afraid of change?
This is why I title this week’s blog as “Our Time is Now”. It is…...it is time to do something different in this country because the same approach is not working. You may not like President Obama yet from where I sit, he pushed sensitive issues to the forefront and now we have same-sex marriage. That should have been accepted since the beginning of time. If you are reading my blog for the first time, this event mattered so much to me because I am now in a very happy same sex marriage. And no one will ever take away that rite from me. We are finally speaking and giving attention to the transgender community. Again, we should have done it all along because no one is in a place to judge another human being’s choices. These are not issues that cause anyone any harm. On the contrary, the choice to be in a same sex marriage or the choice to be transgender allows a person to live their live in peace.
So here we are, nearing the point of voting for possibly a woman or a man of Jewish faith for the Democratic nominee for President. This time around, I am choosing a woman because, frankly, the men have not done a good job for over 200 years. Isn’t the definition of insanity that we keep doing the same bad thing over and over again and producing the same negative result? So, it’s time for a woman to be President. I don’t care if you like Hillary Clinton or not, she has solid experience and she’s a fearless driver. That is who we need in a Presidential role. We made history with electing our first African American President yet we voted for him because he truly was the best choice. Same here, I am happy to put my faith in Hillary Clinton and will proudly canvass for her votes, knock on doors and be ready to stand face to face with the nay-sayers. The same way I have my opinion, I make space to listen to others perspective. As long as we can do it respectfully, there will be so much more value to come from the spirited conversation.
Yet in the end, it’s our time for a change and to have a woman for President is a change we need. You can poo poo it yet most of the people who downplay the possibility are fearful that she may do a better job. Say what you will, it’s our time and we are going to take this dream all the way to the White House!!
